How does Passive Radar work? We thought we’d break it down for you.

Passive radar is a ‘receive only’ technology that doesn’t need its own transmitter or a target to transmit. Instead, it uses Illuminators of Opportunity—existing energy sources like TV or radio signals in the environment —to detect targets.

Signals bounce off objects (like planes or drones) and return to our passive radar receiver, tracking where the target is and how far away.

Why does it matter? It’s stealthy, energy-efficient, and allows you to see without being seen—perfect for scenarios where staying under the radar (pun intended) is the ultimate goal.

The evolution of small Uncrewed Aerial Systems (sUAS) has significantly altered the defence landscape. The rise in drone-related activity poses a real and present asymmetric threat. 
 
There is no silver bullet solution. Countering the sUAS challenge requires effective integration of multiple sensors into an overarching C2 system that delivers rapid, coordinated, early detection, tracking, and elimination of drones in the environment.

Every once in a while, you encounter a story so inspiring it stays with you - gently shaping your view of the world and how you move through it.  
 
For our team, one of those stories is of five amazing ladies known as the 'SATCEN Girls' who in the 1950s and 60's provided critical satellite detection and tracking services for NASA from right here in South Australia. 
 
Working as human ‘computers’, the SATCEN Girls were linked into a network of astronomers around Australia, coordinating efforts to sight and report NASA satellites as they passed through our orbit. Using rudimentary tools (by today’s standards), maps and data supplied from the US, these incredible women delivered a critical service, key to advancing the world’s understanding and utilisation of space.
 
Last week, our team had the honour and pleasure of hosting these ladies and their proud family members in our Gepps Cross office as we officially named our Ops Room, the heart of our global sensor network, the 'SATCEN' in their honour. 
 
Theirs was a quiet but key contribution to Australia's space history.  We wanted to share just a snippet of this, and to say thank you to Heather Milhench (nee King), Jeni Skipworth (nee Darley), Lynne Bates (nee Hill), Carita Pyne (nee Munday), and Carole Manners (nee Masson) - the SATCEN Girls for the work they did and the legacy they have created that continues to inspire those of us who work to keep space safe and accessible for all today. 
 
May our SATCEN stand as a reminder of that critical contribution every day.

Working at Silentium is not just about building cutting edge technology, it’s about being part of an inclusive team where we support and encourage each other to participate in activates that enhance mind and body alongside the day to day.

This month, we were proud to enter three teams in the National Corporate Cup (Corporate Cup Adelaide), an initiative that’s been running for more than four decades, incentivising Adelaide businesses to build health, wellbeing and camaraderie in their workforce.

With a little competitive tension in the team we got out and about around beautiful Mawson Lakes, running and walking to clock up a total of more than 600 km over the 16-week program - boosting team health and morale along the way!

Lots of fun was had by all - a great example of living our company values - we succeed as a team and don’t take ourselves too seriously .

We have indeed experienced strong support in the 'proposal to prototype' stages of development of our passive radar systems. 
 
Now, as we stand ready, with capability that is ripe for acquisition, we reach the final and most critical stage of that process. 

Continuity of support at this stage looks like contracts that empower production. Production realises true capability translation. Production gets products into the hands of the war fighter. 
 
We look forward to exploring the pathways for rapid acquisition of our MAVERICK passive radars, to ensure we realise the capability translation.

News today - Silentium Defence has delivered the first tranche of sensor systems for Australia's Joint Air Battle Management System (JABMS), AIR6500.
 
Delivered to Lockheed Martin Australia, our MAVERICK Fortress-3D passive radars provide a new 3D capability that enables instantaneous, wide field of view surveillance with even higher fidelity and greater accuracy for cross cuing of complimentary sensors and effectors. 
 
We are exceptionally proud of this product, and this milestone. We can do it locally!

It was a pleasure to host Senator the Hon. David Fawcett at our Gepps Cross facility today. We introduced him to our MAVERICK passive radar suite, and our global Space Data-as-a-Service offering, currently providing timely detection and tracking data to US and UK customers - helping to keep LEO safe and accessible for all.
 
As a former member of the Australian Defence Force and previous owner of a defence and aviation industry business, we had a lot in common and plenty to discuss! It was terrific to talk through our global export ambitions and where we see Silentium putting Australia on the map. Likewise, potential improvements to Australia's domestic defence procurement processes - changes that could unblock scale and expedite delivery of critical sovereign capabilities from within our own SME community. 
 
We value open lines of dialogue around these matters from both sides of Government. With a shared vision, and appetite to embrace local, we can achieve true sovereign capability advantage while building high tech jobs, skills, and our economy.

Following on the heels of the Defence Strategic review, the event put a spotlight on the innovative Australia companies delivering outstanding dual-use technologies for Defence and commercial markets.  

It was great to hear from a cross section of Defence and industry.

What was abundantly clear is we have the skills, technologies, and aligned vision to deliver rapid, asymmetric advantage for Defence within our local industry.

With equally rapid access to the requisite purchase orders, contracts, and funding, we can achieve just that!

This is why we do what we do 

Our team detected an anomaly in an otherwise ‘normal’ pass of two partner satellites in LEO this week.

Two objects became three. Un-planned, and un-catalogued…if you were just relying on Space Track data for your decision-making.

Because our MAVERICK S-series passive radar can happily differentiate closely spaced objects though, we were able to detect this change and report it - at pace.
